CHAPTER 9

A Much Needed Shot In The Arm

The real general Alexander Kuskaya turned out to be a very intelligent and highly educated individual.

“We have to find out just how many of Kennings plants are on the base”, Kuskaya said.

“Those guards we killed will have to be relieved at some point”, said Cowner. “We need to watch the area carefully to see who goes to replace them.”

“Can’t we find out through CCTV?” Bradley asked.

“That area is not covered due it being derelict”, Kuskaya answered. “Anyway, the new guard will come at 3pm. There are a total of four guards in all.”

“This time”, said Brigmore, “don’t kill them as we may need them for information. We want to know who exactly is working for whom”.

“They are working for the Borlitsky Corporation”, explained Kuskaya.” When I refused to go along with their evil schemes, they … well, to cut a long story short, they kidnapped me. Kenning took a scan of my brain and created that HGR”.

“Why didn’t they kill you after the scan?”, Oakley asked.

“If anything went wrong with the first HGR or if they decided they might need a stock of these things, then they would have to keep the original I suppose”.

At 3pm the relief guards were waylaid and taken to Brigmore’s office for interrogation. After some ‘gentle persuasion’ from Bradley and Oakley, they gave a list of all Borlitsky Corporation plants working at the Ural base. They were arrested and incarcerated in the old Soviet dungeons. Kuskaya informed the authorities in Moscow about the recent events at the Ural base. The Chairman and directors of the Borlitsky Corporation were arrested and under emergency regulations the company was immediately nationalised. The prisoners at the Ural base were taken to Moscow by the military police for further interrogation. Bradley and Oakley took Kenning back to the UK in handcuffs.

“We need to get back to the critical business of devising a vaccine before the main pathogenic cloud hits the Earth” said Brigmore.

“Yes, but before we wrap up this whole nasty episode”, advised Kuskaya, “we have to find out exactly how many of Kennings HGRs there are and the precise orbits they are in. When they are destroyed, the pathogen advance will at least be slowed down and that should give you guys more breathing space for working on the vaccine”.

Kenning gave Kuskaya the number and orbits of the HGRs. These were located and destroyed by the Russian military. The five HGRs in lower orbits were taken out by Russian hypersonic fighter planes, the ones in higher orbits were destroyed by ground to space missiles.

Two days later, Feodora Kostkri announced the great news. She excitedly summoned her colleagues into the base’s main lab.

“We have it, we have it!”, she exclaimed. “Feodora II has cracked the bacteria’s complex genetic code. And not only has she done that – she has come up with a vaccine”.

There were whoops and yelps of joy all around. This was the holy grail they had been seeking. This was the great moment they had all been waiting for.
